The challenge

In 2000, independent electronic music labels — Warp, Rephlex, Mille Plateaux, Kompakt, Raster-Noton — had minimal online presence. Their artists had no editorial voice, no biographical archives, no place to reach English and Spanish-speaking audiences simultaneously. Mainstream music press largely ignored experimental and electronic genres.

The editorial challenge was to build a credible, high-volume bilingual platform that could serve two distinct audiences — English-speaking readers expecting the analytical precision of music journalism, and Spanish-speaking readers who responded better to a warmer, more conversational register — without compromising the depth or authority of the content.

This required producing a consistent flow of original bilingual content — album reviews, artist biographies, live reports, interviews — at scale, independently, over a decade, with no institutional backing and no editorial team initially.


The process

Every piece of content followed the same bilingual editorial pipeline: original writing or adaptation in English, followed by an independent Spanish version — not a translation, but a parallel editorial piece written with a different register, tone, and reader relationship.

For album reviews, the English version maintained analytical distance and critical precision — locating the record within genre history, identifying technical and compositional decisions, evaluating against the artist’s previous work. The Spanish version communicated the same critical judgments but in a more direct, conversational voice — closer to how an informed friend might recommend an album than how a publication might review it.

Artist biographies followed a different logic: transforming promotional materials from labels into genuinely informative, editorially independent profiles — removing marketing language, verifying facts, adding historical context, and writing in a voice that served the reader rather than the label. Over 10 years, editorial partnerships were established with 9 of the most respected independent electronic music labels globally.

Artist Biography — Robert Moog (EN)

Robert Moog (1934–2005) was the engineer who took electronic sound out of labs and put it into musicians’ hands. In 1964 he launched the Moog synthesizer, the first commercially successful keyboard-based synth, redefining how electronic music could be played. His work with Wendy Carlos on Switched-On Bach showed the world that synths weren’t just machines — they could be expressive, emotional, and widely appealing. Moog’s building blocks — oscillators, filters, envelopes — are still the core of modern sound design. What made Moog different wasn’t just the tech — it was his mindset. He listened to musicians and shaped his instruments around real creative needs, not engineering ego. That human-first approach is why his designs still feel intuitive today, even inside modern software synths.

En 1964 lanzó el sintetizador Moog, el primer sinte con teclado que realmente funcionó a nivel comercial, cambiando por completo la forma de tocar música electrónica. Su colaboración con Wendy Carlos en Switched-On Bach dejó claro que los sintetizadores no eran solo máquinas raras: podían sonar humanos, emocionales y conectar con mucha gente.
