Most founders and entrepreneurs carry their brand identity intuitively — embedded in personal history, aesthetic preferences, and values they have never fully verbalized. Extracting that material through direct questioning rarely works: clients default to generic answers, block on professional language, or describe what they think they should say rather than what they actually feel.
The challenge was designing an editorial tool that could bypass those defenses — an experience that felt personal, relaxed, and even enjoyable, while systematically generating the raw textual material needed to define a brand’s authentic voice.
And critically: each client is different. A one-size-fits-all questionnaire produces one-size-fits-all answers. The tool needed to speak to each client in their own language — literally and tonally — creating a sense of private dialogue rather than professional interrogation.
The process
Before writing a single card, I conducted an initial interview with each client to understand their personality, communication style, cultural context, and the emotional register of their project. That information directly shaped the voice, tone, and vocabulary of their specific card set.
Each card was written as an original editorial piece — a narrative prompt crafted with specific psychological intent to lower the client’s guard, activate associative thinking, and generate authentic spontaneous language. The writing had to feel warm, personal, and conversational — not clinical or procedural.
Clients received their customized cards with a single instruction: set aside a free weekend, away from work pressure, and respond to each one as an exercise in honest reflection. The relaxed, unhurried context was intentional — it consistently produced richer and more truthful answers than any structured interview format.
The six card dimensions covered: narrative origin (Your Story), sensory and visual inspiration (Your Inspiration), ideal client experience (Your Ideal Business Experience), business positioning (You and Your Business), value alignment and friction points (Uncommon Ground), and customer motivation (Your Ideal Customer’s Motivation).

Results & impact
The Discovery Card system was applied to more than 40 clients across the US and Spain over a decade — across sectors including education, health and wellness, creative services, and professional consulting.
Clients regularly reported that the card experience felt unexpectedly enjoyable — and that the resulting brand materials felt authentically like them rather than a professional construct imposed from outside.
The customized language approach proved consistently more effective than structured interviews or generic questionnaires. The cards generated spontaneous, emotionally honest material that no direct question could have elicited — and that precision made every subsequent editorial decision faster and more accurate.
The system demonstrated a core editorial skill: the ability to design language that opens people up — and to read the raw material those conversations produce with enough precision to detect the authentic voice underneath.
Skills demonstrated
This project demonstrates a specific editorial skill: designing language that invites authentic self-expression and transforming the resulting raw material into precise brand voice. Key skills in action:
- Narrative writing — prompts crafted with psychological and emotional intent
- Customized editorial voice — tone and register adapted per client profile
- Bilingual content creation EN/ES — original writing in both languages, not translation
- Qualitative interview — extracting brand identity through structured conversation
- Brand voice development — keywords, tone guidelines, and positioning frameworks
- Scale and consistency — system applied to 40+ clients with repeatable results
